Connection - Short Story

Monsieur Estragon and Mr. Tibbs went away from Mr. Cleaver’s house in their car. They were thinking in Mr. Cleaver’s face and started talking nonsense.

Mr. Tibbs imagined Mr. Cleaver as if he were in front of a big puzzling labyrinth. Monsieur was listening carefully and adding new challenges to Mr. Tibbs story. The labyrinth he imagined was very similar to the carpet he had in his house when he was a child. It was an enormous red and black and yellow carpet, where he had the most wonderful risky memories.

Mr. Tibbs was creating an amazing story. He described the labyrinth in great detail. The scenario was the dinner party that Mr. Cleaver set out to climb the social ladder. He was mentioning snakes referring to the guests and red-hot lumps of coal just to make a metaphor of the guests red faces when he mentioned that the superb wine had been decanted before dinner and they had enjoyed it immensely.

Of course! While Mr Tibbs was talking, Monsieur immediately related the labyrinth with his carpet. He remembered the black part of it and also how the snakes (he had created in his mind) showed up when he was near to the border between the yellow and the black parts. The poisonous snakes!!! They were the worst part of the crossing. In that moment, Monsieur realized on the safety zone of the carpet and he asked Mr. Tibbs for the yellow part of the labyrinth. He caught Mr. Tibbs off balance!

Yellow was not exactly what Mr. Tibbs had in his mind. He had imagined Mr. Cleaver going into the labyrinth when he became wealthy. Wealthy??? Mr. Tibbs said it aloud and they couldn’t stop laughing. The yellow part was the Money!!! While Mr. Cleaver walks on the yellow part he will not be bitten…
